In brief
The Ichikowitz Family Foundation was founded upon the belief that Africa’s potential can be unlocked through education, the respect for human rights, a better understanding of Africa’s dynamic history and the conservation of its rich biodiversity. It is committed to the kind of active citizenship that promotes the preservation of Africa’s heritage, the conservation of its environment, and the empowerment of Africa’s youth.
The African Youth Survey is a White Paper, published biannually, on the insights into the aspirations, motivations, and viewpoints of Africa’s youth, providing governments, the private sector, and civil society with a view into this pan-African identity. We were asked to design and lay out the African Youth Survey since its inception in 2020.

What we did
In consultation with the client, we set out to create a report that would be distinctly African—modern, inspiring, and youthful—a conscious move away from the style of a traditional, conventional, research report.
Working with Muti Studio, a Cape Town-based illustration company, a look and feel was developed. The continent’s youth are vibrant, bold, and optimistic, and the design imbued exactly that—a strong palette, consistently used over more than 108 pages of infographics, contributor thought pieces, and analysis. Each of the 10 chapters dives into a designated theme—ranging from Afro-optimism to Community Cohesion—with a beautifully crafted illustration. All data received from PSB, the research company that conducted the survey and interpreted the data, was carefully considered to create dynamic, engaging, accurate, and pertinent infographics.

Outcome
Having a printed copy of the research makes the vast amount of data readily available for referencing and bookmarking—while the design, size, and finish of the book lend themselves to being kept on one’s desk, close at hand. The approach taken allowed the various sets of data to be broken down and represented as stand-alone infographics that could then be published across various media, channels, and platforms.
Static in book form and animated in digital and video environments, the data comes to life. Through the combination of the design and illustrated elements, each finding is made visually striking, rapidly understood, and easily unpacked.
